Hot water repairs

Plenty of hot water problems can be fixed without replacing the whole system. We are licensed to service, repair and replace electric and gas hot water systems across Queensland, and we will tell you straight whether a repair makes sense.

Common hot water problems we fix

  • No hot water at all. Often a failed element, thermostat, pilot or ignition fault, or a tripped circuit.
  • Water not as hot as it used to be. A thermostat or element on the way out, or sediment build up in the tank.
  • Hot water runs out quickly. The system may be too small for the household, or part of it has failed.
  • Leaking from the tank or valves. A dripping relief valve can be normal in small amounts, but a constant leak or water pooling under the tank needs a plumber.
  • Rusty or discoloured hot water. Often a sign the tank is corroding inside.
  • Strange noises. Rumbling or popping can point to sediment in the bottom of the tank.
  • Pilot light keeps going out on a gas system.

If you notice water leaking from the base of the tank itself, switch the system off and call us. Tank leaks do not fix themselves and usually mean the system is near the end of its life.

Hot water system replacement and installation

From fast same day replacements to full energy efficient upgrades, our licensed plumbers keep your hot water running reliably. Here is a plain language look at the main options.

System typeHow it worksWorth a look if
Electric storageHeats and stores water in an insulated tank using an electric elementYou want a simple like for like swap and already have electric
GasHeats water with a gas burnerYou already have gas connected at the house
Heat pumpPulls heat from the air to warm water in a tank, like a fridge in reverseYou want lower running costs on electric and have room outside for the unit

Electric storage

Electric storage systems are a common like for like swap. They are straightforward to install where an electric system is already in place, and with the right size tank they suit most homes.

Gas hot water

Gas systems heat quickly and are a good fit where the home already has gas. We install, service and repair gas hot water systems, with all work done to Queensland standards.

Heat pump

Heat pumps use less electricity than a standard electric element to heat the same water, which is why people choose them as an energy efficient upgrade. They work best in warmer weather, which suits the Sunshine Coast. They need a spot outside with some airflow, and we can talk through where yours would go.

Not sure which is right for you? Tell us how many people live in the house, how you use hot water and what is there now, and we will recommend the most efficient option for your situation.

What size hot water system do you need?

Size depends on household size and how you use hot water. As a guide, a family of four often needs a 250 to 315 litre storage system. Bigger families, lots of long showers or a spa bath may need more. A couple or single person may be fine with less.

Getting the size right matters. Too small and you run out halfway through the second shower. Too big and you pay to heat water you never use. We assess your situation and recommend a system tailored to your needs.

Brands we supply, install and repair

We supply, install and repair Australia’s leading hot water brands, including:

  • Rheem
  • Rinnai
  • Dux
  • Bosch
  • Thermann

and more. If you have a different brand, give us a call. We service all brands.

Keep your system running longer

A few simple checks can add years to your hot water system.

  1. Replace the sacrificial anode. The anode protects the tank from corrosion. Replacing it around every 5 years can extend the life of the system. We can do this for you on request.
  2. Test the relief valve. Gently lift the lever on the pressure and temperature relief valve every six months or so to make sure it is working. If it does not reset or keeps dripping heavily, call us.
  3. Keep the area around the unit clear. Gas and heat pump units need airflow.
  4. Watch for early warning signs. Rusty water, rumbling, small leaks or hot water running out sooner than usual are worth getting checked before the system fails.
  5. Book a service. For businesses, our quarterly preventative maintenance plans include hot water checks.

Hot water FAQs

Can you fix my hot water today?

We offer same day hot water callouts across the Coast and we are open 24 hours, 7 days. Call 0421 708 999.

How long should a hot water system last?

Most systems last between 8 and 12 years, depending on maintenance. Regular checks, including replacing the sacrificial anode about every 5 years, can extend that.

Can you repair or replace my electric or gas hot water system?

Yes. We are licensed to service, repair and replace electric and gas systems across Queensland. We also supply, install and repair heat pump systems.

What if my new system cannot be installed straight away?

We keep a small temporary hot water unit on standby. It plugs into a normal power point and gives you hot water until the replacement is installed.

What size hot water system do I need?

It depends on household size and usage. As a guide, a family of four often needs a 250 to 315 litre system. We will assess your home and recommend the most efficient option.

How much does a new hot water system cost?

It depends on the type and size of system and what the installation involves. We give you an upfront quote before any work starts, so you can compare options with no hidden surprises.

Is a heat pump worth it on the Sunshine Coast?

It can be. Heat pumps use less electricity than a standard electric element and they work best in warm weather. We can talk through whether one suits your home and household.

Which brands do you work on?

We supply, install and repair leading brands including Rheem, Rinnai, Dux, Bosch and Thermann, and we service all brands.

My hot water relief valve is dripping. Is that a problem?

A small amount of water from the relief valve while the system heats can be normal. A constant flow, or water pooling under the tank, is not. Switch the system off and call us.

What are the signs my hot water system is about to fail?

Rusty or discoloured hot water, water pooling around the base of the tank, rumbling or popping noises, and hot water running out sooner than it used to are the common warning signs. If your system is past 10 years old and showing any of these, it is worth getting it checked before it fails completely.

Gas or electric: which is better for my home?

There is no single right answer. Gas makes sense if your home already has gas connected. Electric storage is a simple like for like swap where you already have electric, and a heat pump is the energy efficient electric option. We will look at what you have now and how your household uses hot water, then recommend the most efficient option.
