Blocked drain? We can clear it today

A blocked drain has a way of getting worse at the worst possible time. The shower turns into a paddling pool, the toilet gurgles, or the kitchen sink just sits there full. H1 Plumbing & Drainage clears blocked drains across Doonan, Noosa and the Sunshine Coast, and we offer same day drain service.

Drainage is half our name for a reason. We use a CCTV drain camera to see exactly what is going on inside the pipe and high pressure water jetting to clear it, so we fix the blockage properly the first time instead of just pushing it further down the line.

If water is backing up right now, call 0421 708 999. We are open 24 hours, 7 days.

Signs your drain is blocked (or about to be)

Most blockages give you a warning before they fail completely. Watch for:

  • Slow draining sinks, showers or basins. Water that used to vanish now hangs around.
  • Gurgling noises from the plughole, toilet or floor waste when another fixture is draining.
  • Bad smells coming up from drains, especially outside near the gully.
  • Water backing up into the shower or floor waste when you flush or run the washing machine.
  • The toilet rising higher than normal before it drains away.
  • Overflowing outside gully or a wet patch in the yard that does not dry out.
  • Soggy lawn or lush green strips that follow the line of a pipe.

Acting quickly when you notice these signs usually means a simpler, cheaper job than waiting for a full blockage or a damaged pipe.

What blocks drains on the Sunshine Coast

Every blockage is a bit different, but these are the usual causes we find.

CauseWhere we usually find itWhat it looks like
Tree rootsOlder sewer and stormwater lines near gardens, gum trees and palmsSlow drains that get worse over months, recurring blockages
Grease and fatKitchen sinks, café and restaurant drains, grease trapsKitchen sink slow first, smelly drains
Hair and soap build upShowers, basins and floor wastesBathroom drains slowing one by one
Wipes and sanitary itemsToilets and the main sewer lineToilet blocks or rises, sewer backs up
Sand, silt and leavesStormwater pits, downpipes and yard drainsYard flooding in heavy rain, overflowing gutters
Damaged or sagging pipeAnywhere, often after ground movement or old joints failBlockage keeps coming back after clearing

Tree roots are a big one around here. Roots go looking for water, and a tiny gap in an old joint is all they need to get in. Once inside, they grow into a net that catches everything else going down the line.

How we clear blocked drains properly

Tree roots removed from a blocked sewer pipe by H1 Plumbing & Drainage

Step 1. Find it with a CCTV drain camera

Guessing wastes time and money. We feed a CCTV drain camera into the line to see the blockage, how bad it is and what caused it. A locator then pinpoints where the problem sits from above ground, so if any digging is needed, it is in the right spot and as small as possible.

Step 2. Clear it with high pressure jetting

Our high pressure water jetter blasts through roots, grease, fat and debris and scours the pipe walls clean. Jetting clears the full width of the pipe rather than punching a small hole through the middle of the blockage, which is why the fix lasts longer.

Step 3. Fix the cause, not just the symptom

Once the drain is flowing, we check the line again with the camera. If the pipe is cracked, broken or full of root entry points, we explain what we found and give you an upfront quote for a longer term fix, so the blockage does not keep coming back. You decide what happens next, with no hidden surprises.

Drains we clear

We look after drains for homes, businesses and strata properties, including:

  • Sewer lines and main house drains
  • Kitchen, bathroom and laundry drains
  • Toilets and floor wastes
  • Stormwater lines, downpipes and pits
  • Commercial kitchen drains and grease traps for cafés and restaurants

Blocked drains are often what turns an ordinary night into a plumbing emergency. If sewage is coming back up into the house, see our 24/7 emergency plumbing service for what to do while we are on the way.

Stormwater and yard drainage

Sunshine Coast storms can drop a lot of rain in a short time. If your yard turns into a pond, water pools against the house, or downpipes overflow every time it pours, the stormwater system is not coping.

We design, install and maintain stormwater solutions for properties across the Sunshine Coast, including ag pipes, pits and absorption trenches, all to Queensland standards. Often the first job is clearing what is already there. Silt, leaves and roots in stormwater lines are common. If the system was never big enough, we can plan a proper drainage upgrade.

One of our customers put it well after we sorted out their yard:

“After calling 3 other plumbers and a week of constant flooding, my backyard is now dry and fixed!” Mark Johns

Another was impressed that we checked in afterwards:

“I was particularly impressed when he phoned me during the recent Saturday afternoon storm to make sure our new drainage was performing as expected (it was).” PortfireStudios

Things you can do to keep drains flowing

A few habits go a long way. Here is a simple checklist to stick on the fridge.

  1. Wipe greasy pans before washing. Fat and oil set hard in the pipes once they cool.
  2. Use a plughole strainer in the kitchen sink and shower to catch food scraps and hair.
  3. Only flush the three Ps. Pee, poo and toilet paper. Wipes, even “flushable” ones, do not break down like paper.
  4. Keep an eye on trees near your sewer line. If you are planting, keep big trees away from where the pipes run.
  5. Clear leaves from gutters and pits before storm season so stormwater can get away.
  6. Do not ignore a slow drain. It is much easier to clear a partial blockage than a full one.
  7. Book a camera inspection if a drain keeps blocking. It shows whether roots or a damaged pipe are behind it.

For cafés and restaurants, a regular maintenance plan is worth it. We offer quarterly preventative maintenance that includes grease trap flushing and servicing and sewer or stormwater drain maintenance, which helps you avoid a shut kitchen on a busy day.

Blocked drains FAQs

How do you clear a blocked drain?

We use a CCTV drain camera to find the blockage and a high pressure water jetter to clear it, whether it is tree roots, grease or general debris. Then we check the line again to make sure it is clear.

How much does it cost to unblock a drain?

It depends on where the blockage is, what caused it and how easy the drain is to access. We always give you an upfront price before the main work starts, with no hidden surprises.

Can you clear my drain today?

We offer same day drain service and we are open 24 hours, 7 days. Call 0421 708 999 and tell us what is happening.

Why does my drain keep blocking?

Recurring blockages usually mean something inside the pipe is catching waste. Tree roots, a cracked or sagging section, or a build up of grease are the common culprits. A camera inspection shows which one it is.

Is drain cleaner from the supermarket OK to use?

For a small hair or soap build up it may help a little, but it will not shift roots or a solid blockage. Harsh chemicals can also be rough on older pipes. If it has not worked after one go, call a plumber.

Will you need to dig up my yard?

Not usually. The camera and locator tell us exactly where the problem is, so most blockages are cleared without digging. If a pipe is broken and has to be repaired, we only dig where it is needed and explain it first.

Do you handle stormwater drainage problems?

Yes. We clear blocked stormwater lines and design and install stormwater solutions including ag pipes, pits and absorption trenches that comply with Queensland standards.

Do you clear commercial drains and grease traps?

Yes. We work with cafés, restaurants, shops and strata properties, and offer quarterly preventative maintenance plans that include grease trap servicing and drain maintenance.

What are the signs of a blocked sewer?

Gurgling toilets, water coming up through the shower or floor waste, bad smells and an overflowing outside gully. If more than one fixture is slow at the same time, the main sewer line is the likely problem.

What should I do while I wait for the plumber?

Stop using any taps, toilets, showers and appliances that drain into the blocked line, including the dishwasher and washing machine. If sewage has come up inside, keep kids and pets away from it. Lift rugs and anything valuable off the floor, and do not pour boiling water or chemicals down a sewer drain that is already backing up.

Can a blocked drain damage my home?

It can. A sewer that overflows inside causes water damage and is a health risk, and a blocked stormwater line can push water against the house or under doors in heavy rain. Roots left in a pipe can also crack it over time. Clearing a blockage early is almost always cheaper than fixing the damage later.
